The Accidental Consultant

I didn’t set out to start my own business.

Well, no--that’s a lie.

I had always intended to go into business for myself, because as a serial entrepreneur, I KNEW that’s where I would eventually end up.

But it was always... “later.”

I’ll go into business for myself...“eventually.”

“One day” I’m just going to say, “Screw this! I’m opening my OWN company!”

As it happens, “one day” turned out to be sooner than I thought.

My mission in life has always been to help people in some way. For a while I thought that volunteer charity work was the only way to do that...but that doesn’t pay the rent, right?

Then I thought working for a charitable organization was the only way to do that and still (kinda?) make money. Still not a good fit. (I’m not trying to be a millionaire, but a girl’s gotta eat!)

Then one day, I realized that it wasn’t complicated at all. In fact, it was really simple:

• I get the most fulfillment from helping others become the BEST possible versions of themselves.

• I get excited by helping others find opportunities for improvement--with a swanky new website, a killer new workshop presentation, or a streamlined (read: WAY EASIER) social media plan.

• Most of all, I realized that making the lives of others easier and more fruitful makes me happy.

Over the years as I had built and accelerated half a dozen other companies, I had run into plenty of other marketing/branding/business development folks. I was fortunate to learn from some of them at university, and they were and are incredible inspiration. These guys are determined to fight the good fight against the “sleazy marketer” image this industry can suffer from, thanks to a few really bad apples out there.

Others? Others were full of absolute rubbish. I couldn’t stop myself from rolling my eyes at the stuff they spouted. They were all the same--fake, sales-y, gimmicky, up to their eyeballs in buzzwords, and ultimately more smoke-and-mirrors than anything else. It was all just an image--not to mention an enormous waste of time.


Yeah, that got annoying real quick. And it was gross, because that's not what real marketing is about.


Real marketing is about helping people solve problems.

I didn’t have time for that fake stuff as I was working to build and develop these brands, and I swore up and down that if I ever went into business for myself “one day” I would not cooperate with that nonsense. I would be true to who I am: passionate, helpful, obsessed with improvement, honest, hardworking, and above all...authentic.

Then when I least expected it, I found myself at a critical turning point in my life. I was suddenly presented with an unexpected opportunity:

Do I want to spend the rest of my life working my ass off to build someone else’s dream?

Or do I want to spend the rest of my life working my ass off to build MINE?

The choice was easy.

I believe that small businesses and creative individuals are the lifeblood of this country, and it’s my mission to support them. (If we don’t, we’re going to wind up with approximately 3 companies to choose from: Amazalmart, ExxoNBComcast, and VerizonMcDonaldsYumFoods Inc.)
